Louis Noble's Page

Hi, my name is Louis Noble.

Having just rejoined the club after many years, I have been asked to write a few articles relevant to the River Alyn, these will appear on this web site over the next few months. I hope you find them informative? Now for Anglers and others  that do not know me, please read on.

I have over 40 years experience of game angling on waters varying from the chalk streams of the South to the rain fed rivers and streams of Northern England and the Scottish Borders. Pride of place though must be given to a lifetime’s experience on the waters of Shropshire and Wales, including the Alyn many years ago! The areas in which I have always lived. I have taken salmon, sea-trout, trout and grayling on both fly and bait, aquiring considerable knowledge along the way, which I hope to be able to pass on to you while being a member of this club.
Always involved in other aspects of the sport, I have held the position of Editor for the Grayling Society & the Flydresser’s Guild and have been local branch organiser for those same bodies, plus the Salmon & Trout Association. For many years I have been a guest speaker and flydressing demonstrator at various angling organisations, also I am very pleased to be a regular contributor to Trout & Salmon magazine.

I hold the Game Angling Instructor Association's highest qualification of Advanced Professional Game Angling Instructor (APGIA) This qualifies me to instruct in aspects of salmon, trout & sea-trout angling and also fly dressing. Also I am also Chairman of Assessors & Examiners for GAIA

If you would like any instruction please contact me for me for further information

Basic Techniques
One thing that we’ve taken for granted is the simple issue of how to hold a fly rod – or is it really that simple.

Tales from the river Bank
We can have the best flies, rods etc but they’re useless if not combined with sound tactics and in my book, the soundest tactic is our actual approach to the prey.
We can have the best rod, reel & line that money can buy but if our leader isn’t efficient then catching fish can be harder than it could be.

A tactic for those impossible days…

I think the first thing to say is that we all stand to suffer from those days when nothing disturbs the surface and fish seem impossible to tempt – the reasons ?

Louis Flies for the River
A fly for all seasons! …now wouldn’t that be a good thing – to have a pattern that could be used all season through !.
Staying faithful to Frank Sawyer’s original dressing and yes, I use fine copper wire as tying silk.
