Fishing Reports 2005

3rd March
Sonia and I fished for 2 hours using only dry flies, (Iron Blue) We fished higher up the river, above the second weir, no one else to be seen. Started fishing around 12noon, large hatch started around 1pm. I caught 5 fish, largest around 1lb smallest about 9oz. Sonia caught up with me for coffee then had a go at fishing my swim, for a beginner she didn't do bad!! cast to a rising fish in the fast flowing water, next thing a trout was landed of around 1lb 2oz. Sonia's largest fish on our river yet and the first of the season. Forget using wet flies, there is plenty of sport to be had with a dry!!!
Simon & Sonia 9th March
Fished Griffin water above second weir today for around 2 hrs after travelling back from a week working in Scotland. Started fishing around 2pm, very little rising. Using an Alyn Special, I missed 3 good takes but managed to contact on the 4th in a very slow pool. The fish weighed between 1.25 - 1.5lbs! Martin was there to see the fish. Released for the next person to catch.
Simon.

12th March
Fished Griffin water again today starting at 1330. Very cold wind, hard casting. Fish were rising to the good hatch. Three fish caught all around 1lb. All to a dry. Watch out for the wind chill factor, nearly froze!! Finished fishing around 1500hrs.
Simon.

14th March
Fished today with Sonia for 1.5hrs from the sewage works up. Good hatch around 1.30pm. Loads of fish rising. Two fish caught in all, the one on the left was estimated at 1.5- 1.75lbs, big fish! Both caught on my own Dark Olive fly. The other was the smallest yet, not even near 1lb.
Simon.

15th March
1 Fished today between sewage works and griffin Road Bridge 12.00hrs to 15.00 hrs caught three; best fish a good 1lb plus all three taken on a size 14 partridge & orange top dropper position.
John from Davenham Northwich.

Fished for 1hr at upstream of Llay road bridge, only covered 100mts, 9 fish caught on a dry dark olive. Two fish of good size, fly hatch again around 1pm.Water milky in colour. Left Jerry to carry on where I left off. Temp around 12c.and overcast.
Simon.

Fished for half an hour upstream of Simon and I was delighted to catch a decent size fish in one of my favoured places from last year. The fish was encouraged to rise to a dry dark olive.
Sonia

16th March
I had a wonderful hour on the river with the usual dry fly and the sport was amazing; I had 4 good sized trout all around a 1lb in weight which fought well giving great sport. Last season my total tally was 6 fish which I have already matched in my first three session’s .My coach spent time improving my casting so he was only able to catch a single trout.
Sonia

Managed about 2 hours fishing, lost a cracker to an emerger and had a few splashes on the wet. I.e. had a blank! A fun day though and a good eye opener for me as it’s the first time I’ve fished the water.
Carl Brumby

19th March
Went fishing for 1.5hrs today from the Griffin Bridge and into Griffin Woods. As this part has not been stocked it was a bit of trial and error to find the fish! But fish there are, nothing large only about 6ins in size what you would expect for a un stocked part of the river. The fish were tending to stay in the faster water making fishing with a dry very hard. In all I caught 9 fish all too dry LDO. If you have never fished this section you will be surprised at the quality of the water and the fish.
Simon

Arrived Llay road bridge 10am. Water level at 0. Overcast, light south easterly breeze i.e. downstream from A483. Several fish rising to duns on surface between bridge and two bridge field and although I had takes I just could not connect. Clouds parted around 1pm. and the sun was pleasantly warm but the rises stopped. Spent most of afternoon walking the river up to sewage works and saw no further fish movement. Tried fishing the water in a few likely runs with one of Simon's LDO patterns without raising a single fish. Back downstream about 4pm. I switched to a wet Greenwell's Spider and fished it upstream, nymph style. I had an almost immediate take and landed a very nice trout of around 1lb. which was returned to the water. I had a further take on the same fly but the lively little chap managed to free himself. Good day though!
Allan Swindles.

23rd March
I fished the river for the first time this season on 23rd March. Not many fish were showing but I still managed to catch 5 on Black Klinkhammer.- all returned. Best went about 8 ozs. I am very impressed with the bank work which has been undertaken during the winter. This was my first fishing trip after the birth of a daughter on 17th March!!
Regards, David Meadows

24th March
Fished below sewage works today first main run, took two fish one ten inch the other twelve both to the partridge and orange around lunch time. moved on later up to worms wood had one small fish taken on a diawl bach. only saw the odd fish showing themselves.
John Davenham

Fished today with Sonia for 30mins above the Griffin bridge, Sonia had no luck. I manage to catch one on a LDO dry of about 9ins, better size than the last time .Missed two more takes in the faster water. Jumped into the car to try above Llay road bridge. Sonia wandered off to try further upstream but nothing was rising, so no luck. I caught two fish again to a LDO my biggest fish to date took nearly 10min to land. we estimate the fish weighed close to 2lb! All fish released. See master class how to tie my fly! See the fish in the fish pictures section.
Simon & Sonia

25th March
Fished from Llay road bridge to Sewage weir, started at 11.30 finished at 1pm. Weather very warm when the sun was out, just T-shirt weather. Fished a dry for the whole length of the river. 9 fish caught on the dry from various locations. I very seldom fish with a nymph unless I have no option! at one location I could not tempt any with a dry, so I tried an upstream nymph. I connected with a very; very large fish!! I had no net. Luckily Paul was watching me fish and offered me his net. After a long fight the fish only just fitted into the net! I was shaking, Paul and I estimated the fish weighed well over 3lb! Paul took the photos for proof. The fish was released after recovering. Please don't ask where on the river the fish was caught, it will cost you too much.
Simon.

28th March
Thank you for making our first outing on the Alyn so delightful. You and the other members were very friendly and made us so welcome. We fished till about 5-30pm and ended up the day with the one fish around 1lb (GRHE Dry). Matthew, my nine year old was really taken with it, hopefully a fly fisher of the future now! The River is a credit to the Club. Look forward to meeting you again soon.
Regards Jeff & Matthew Johnson

4th April
Walked the river from Llay bridge to the sewage works with Sonia, no fish were seen rising at all! Managed to persuade two to rise to a dry in the straight cut both were only lightly hooked and got off. Caught one at the sewage pool on a upstream nymph. Sonia had no luck today. First sand martins seen by the sewage works.
Simon

5th April
Fished for a few hours this afternoon (Tuesday). The river is still running off from the recent rain. I caught 1 good fish (1lb) on a Czech nymph in the stretch upstream from the sewage works and two other fish of the same size came off in the same pool.. No fish rising at all.
David Meadows.

9th April
Checked the river at Llay road bridge +1in clear about 4c. Strong cold wind down the river, better when the sun comes out. Decided to have a go for 30mins. No fish were rising, I only had a dry LDO on the rod. Second cast under the bridge brought one to the fly which I hooked, about 9ins. Worked my way up the run for 30mins nothing else to report. Home now at 1210 in Saltney and it is raining.
Simon

Fished from 12.30 – 14.45, caught half a dozen trout on floating nymphs, imitating LDO ' s . The fish were rising sporadically between 13.00 and 14.00.
Allen.

11th April
I fished for a few hours on Monday (12 - 3). River clear but cold and a strong down stream breeze resulting in very few fish showing. Despite the conditions I caught 6 small fish on dry and nymphs.
David Meadows

12th April
Fished Tuesday 12/04 evening for 11/2 hrs from 18:30 - sun had gone in - river clear. Fished at the sewage farm - lots of fish rising, caught on drys & wets. Had six fish average 8 - 9 oz largest 14 oz - fish taking very small flies. All activity stopped at 19:50 - too cold.
Eddie

23rd April
We fished for 1hr, 12-1 above the Griffin Bridge . Have to admit we were using wet flies downstream, hard to get used to. Sonia had no knocks at all; I had a few knocks and one fish on until it jumped. That was in the water just below the style into Griffin woods (Worms Wood) The only other fisherman was Paul fishing his way down stream, he had caught one on a wet by Griffin Bridge .
Simon

30th April
Fished for 1.5 hrs today starting at 1400hr at Llay Road Bridge . River is up again after heavy overnight rain. Only 3 fish were seen to rise, 2 caught 1 got off, all to LDO dry. Be prepared to cover a lot of water to find the rising fish, I walked right up to September cottage and only saw the three rises.
Simon

Fished Griffin Woods today 3pm - 5pm. No fish rising , blanked but what a lovely stretch !!
Jeff & Matthew Johnson

1st May
Fishing Report Sunday 1st May From I fished from 2o' clock until 4.30 got 5 fish, two on a size 16 Copper Hares Ear, and three on a dry fly, size 20 Foam Beatle and two on a size 18 Black Klinkhammer. Three of the fish were decent about 12ins, and two were about 8ins. I fished from the bridge downstream and up to the first style, the wind got up and was a bit of a nuisance, didn't see any fish rise only the ones I caught and didn't see much fly on the water.
Ian Robertson

Fished this morning before bank work for ½ hour 0830 – 0900. After heavy overnight thunderstorms I expected the river to be much higher, the rain does not seem to have affected the height very much. Only fished the first eddy pool above Flame corner, a few fish were rising. 3 were caught with a hawthorn dry, two about ¾ lb the other a small par. If the rain holds off this week should see a great improvement.
Simon

2nd May
Sonia & I spent a good afternoon on the river today, very few fish were rising, and we were both missing the takes on a dry hawthorn. The river was very clear and only up about 2ins, weather was very warm in the sun but we were caught in a huge thunder storm at the top end of the river with no coats. I hooked into a very big trout, this time Sonia measured it; 21ins I know we did not have any scales but this was a perfect male brown with the bottom jaw extending. This fish was over 3lbs! We are going to buy a set of scales today to keep in my fishing jacket. The fish was caught on an upstream nymph.
Simon

8th May
After catching the 21in fish last Monday, we were getting fed up at only guessing the weight of fish caught. A trip up to Foxtons on Saturday where we acquired a set of digital scales. Fished from 8.30 – 9 am before the working party, weather horrible very heavy rain meant no fish rising. Went to where I had caught the fish on Monday. After 10mins and no luck I was about to give up when I had a very gentle take. Fish on, I think it was the same fish but this time it had a mark on the top of its nose. Managed to get it into the net and weigh it, 3lb 6ozs. The fish was returned, if you are lucky enough to catch this fish or a similar sized fish please resist the temptation to kill it and take it home for the table, this size fish has taken a long time to reach this size and is in prime breeding condition! Leave it for the next lucky club member.
Simon

11th May
Stopped off at Llay road bridge on the way home from work at 1700. Fished for 30min below the bridge, fish rising under the footbridge. 3 caught on a dry Hawthorn.
Simon

12th May
Fished from 10:30 to 16:30 had 10 - 12 fish mostly on small dry flies, including Simon’s fish of 3+ lbs (caught it going up river at 11:00 & nearly a second time at 15:00 going down, but another fish rushed in to take my fly. This one was over 1 1/2 lbs.) The fish were reluctant to rise, but those that did take well.
Eddie

13th May
It was great being on the river again and the water was almost clear but with very little rising. A fish was taking olives so I changed pattern and he was mine. Having seen very little action on the river I decided I may as well try for the big fish, as it would be a shame not to feel the weight of such a large fish on light tackle. The fight was amazing but I had to remember the basics of keeping my rod up during the excitement and finally he was in the net, it weighed 3lb 10oz.
Sonia

14th May
Fished before the river walk for 45mins 2 fish caught on griffin waters, this 1lb fish was caught under the Griffin bridge on a black spider. Had another 4 fish after the walk around Llay bridge largest was at flame corner about 10ins these were taken on a dry LDO
Simon

15th May
Fished for several hours today (15th}. Water temperature 12 C. / 54 F. Wind light from NE backing NW late afternoon. Hardly any fish showing all day, about half a dozen rises between Llay bridge and straight cut. Fair amount of fly life about but not a lot on the water. Rose a couple of small fish to a 16 Iron Blue Dun but missed them as is my wont of late. Instant take to Pheasant Tail nymph late afternoon, the only fish of the day, about 1/2lb and even that got off - it was going back anyway! INCIDENTALLY- I am convinced that I saw two Ospreys at around 5pm. this afternoon. I was fishing a couple of hundred yards below the two bridges when I heard a bit of a commotion just above the trees. The birds were being mobbed by three or four Crows. All flew off upstream. They were not Buzzards, the underside of the wings were white with black edges and fingers and not marbled cream like the Buzzard.
Allan Swindles.

Fished after work party starting at the Sewage works, put a good fish down on dry, went onto nymphs as nothing was rising, fished up to Road Bridge at end of lane where I lost a big fish in the pool under the bridge, fished back but nothing showed.
Why do fish rise once, but does not rise again while you are waiting? Is it me or have other people noticed this.
Ian Robertson

Fished on Sunday from 11:30 - 2:30. Despite the fine weather there were very few fish showing. I caught numerous small fish and then a super fish of 15" above the broken bridge - all safely returned. All the fish were taken on a small gold-head hare’s ear.

.
17th May
Fished downstream from Llay bridge, caught my very first brownie ever, about 10 inches long, I returned it to the river, one lucky trout, and one happy angler, I caught it on dry fly at about two o'clock, another one rose to the same fly, but I lost it, and the fly, that is stuck in the branches on the far bank, pity I never got to know its name, I think it was a hawthorn, all in all, a good day.
Rob Giles

20th May
Stopped off on the way home from work for 30mins at Llay Road Bridge. Mayfly seen on the river below the bridge would have liked to try a Mayfly pattern but had none in my box, must remember to put a few in! Caught one on a LDO above flame corner. River is looking very good, the fishing must pick up again soon.
Simon

21st May
Fished up from sewage works fish rising at the bottom of pool but made a mess of it so went upstream got a 14 ins on a 16 Copper P.T., then nothing until above weir where fish were rising to a hatch of small olives, caught one on a size 18 olive and two on a size 20 Olive. After that the weather closed in and fish went down only got a couple of pulls on Copper P.T. went home soaked. Fished 9o' clock until 1.30pm, weather nice at first but rain moved in.
Ian Robertson.

22nd May
Fished upstream from Llay bridge to straight cut, 2pm.- 6pm. Southerly downstream breeze for most of the afternoon, water temp. 12/13C. Hardly any fish showing even though there were some good hatches of fly on the water. Fish that did rise only did so once or twice then went down and stayed down, perhaps only four or five sightings all afternoon. After a short thunderstorm about 4pm. swallows were picking flies off the water just above two bridges but still no fish showing. Tried dries and nymphs in several likely lies and only had one half hearted pull on a PTN. fished upstream. At this rate I'm going to have to resort to downstream wet!
Allan Swindles

Fished after work party weather bright but still that cool wind. Fished up from Llay Bridge saw fish rising but put them down rose a good fish twice under the second bridge, river went very quiet and fished mainly nymphs, got on 1 small fish. Plenty of fly life on river but fish only showing sporadic, perhaps cool wind putting them down.
Ian Robertson.

25th May
At last the fish are back! After the weather over the last six weeks, tonight was the first time in ages that there are plenty of fish moving. Arrived at 4.30pm, fished for just over the hour from Llay road bridge to The Two bridges. 8 fish caught on a LDO 5 came off, many missed takes. Weather was warm 18c. water flow is very slow. Let’s hope it stays the same!
Simon

29th May
Fishing Report Sunday . Fished after working party started at Llay Bridge fished upstream rose and missed a couple of fish near the bridge and in the run up, but as went upstream the wind got up and it went cool. Saw fish rising but only once and then nothing, this seems to happen a lot on cool days, I tried olive and Black Klinkhammer. At the cow bridge a couple of fish were rising and I got one about 10ins on a small olive dun, I went back downstream and fished near the Llay bridge and got a small one on the same fly.
Ian Robertson

31st May
Fished from 10:00 - 1:00 on Tuesday upstream from the sewage works. Lots of fish were rising in some pools but long stretches seemed empty of fish particularly in Griffin Woods. Caught 6 fish all about 8ozs. on size 16 Black Klinkhammer.
David Meadows

4th June
Fished from Llay bridge upstream, not good conditions very windy and a bit cool. Not many fish showing fished dry fly upstream, got a nice fish about 10ins on a size 20 olive, and then missed a couple. A few fish moving near the tree across the river, raised a few on different flies but missed them. Went very quiet with nothing moving at all then got a 6ins fish on same Olive. that’s all.
Ian Robertson

5th June
Fished by Llay bridge today for couple of hours(1.30 -3.30pm), quite a few fish rising didn’t manage to tempt one, went quiet so moved to Griffin Woods area. No fish showing so decided to change one of the rods to wet. Fished a pheasant tail nymph size 14, caught one about 10ins so then swapped rod with my 9yr old son, Matthew. He then proceeded to catch 2 brownies of around 8ins in about 15 mins. His first ever fish on fly!!!! One very excited lad & a proud Dad !!
Jeff & Matthew Johnson

Fished after work party, from Griffin bridge into the woods, a few fish moving and got three on a size 16 Olive Klinkhammer one about 10ins and two about 7ins, they rise very fast up here and I missed two others, then it went quiet, I fished downstream to the next bridge but nothing. Went home.
Ian Robertson

8th June
Had a couple of hours from 4pm today, landed nil but lost 2 cracking 4 to 5
inch fish! Very few fish showing on the top. Got a few larvae from the underside of a couple of rocks and I have failed to confirm the ID myself but I reckon they are BWO's. I'm sending a couple
of samples to an expert for confirmation of species. I'll get back to you. Still many shrimp and Hydro's evident, this was a very small sample, and also picked up some Large Dark Olive larvae (I did confirm these at home), so these are still worth fishing.
Carl

Wednesday 8th fished after work fished from Llay Bridge up. A few fish rising when started but a wind got up and seemed to put them down. Further up river a few fish rising but could only tempt one about 8 ins and rose and missed a few watched fish rising near the cow bridge and they where very selective what they took
Ian

11th June
Fished in morning a lot of fish showing and managed 7 on Brown Olive Klink in size 16, Olive duns size 20, and a size 16 Black Klink, one fish 14ins and 10ins and others from 6 to 8ins, missed fish as well.
Ian

Prompted by our web master, I can report that although I've only fished a few times this season so far, I have been quite pleased with the results to date. The river seems to be in better shape than in previous years with improved fly life. It is also noticeable that there are well developed fish in evidence, which appear to have grown on from previous stocking and give all the appearance of wild stock. I've tended to fish where I hadn't previously, behind the sewage works, upstream of the top weir and above the Griffin bridge. I did however spend an hour fishing for the many fish that inhabit the pool below the willow tree across the river - caught none of them due to ineptitude at preventing drag. The straight cut now holds fish although I think more work needs done to extend the holding capacity of the water. It is important that we encourage vegetation to grow over the margins to provide cover for fish and flies. Successful flies, Kites Imperial early on when there were large dark olives about, GRHE and sedge, all tied on 18s.and Griffiths Gnat tied smaller. Currently I am having a battle with the EA to limit the amount of suspended solids coming out of the sewage works. The gravel on the bed is becoming a bit sludgy looking although it must be said the fish seem to be thriving in the area! Check the look of the outfall next time you are in the vicinity and if you think the outfall looks murky phone the EA on 0800 807060 and report the incident. They are obliged to do something and ask that they ring you back with their findings.
Howard Stevens (Chairman)

12th June
Fished after work party only stayed a couple of hours but got a fish about 8ins on a size 14 Green Klink. fished from Llay bridge upstream. Wind a problem but still fish showing
Ian

14th June
Arrived at the river at 7.15pm after a long day at work, weather was good apart from a down river wind which made casting hard and my eyes run. I had one of those days; nothing was going right, fly splashing onto the surface, fly getting caught behind and those fish that came to my fly I missed. Nearly decided to go home, had a sit and chat to Jerry putting the world to right, he was not doing well also. Decided to walk up to the straight cut for a look. From the bottom nothing seemed to be rising. Changed my fly to a deer hair sedge and started to work my way up the water. Casting into the fast water that was coming around the edges of the groyne I was not able to see the fly at all, fish started to hit the fly hard, if I saw a rise lift another fish. In 10mins I had caught 6 fish the length of the straight cut, 3 from the same small section of water. I have never fished with sedge before; it proves that we can still learn on the river.
Simon.

16th June
Arrived about 18:30 on Thursday , fished from the two bridges up stream. The weather was warm bright and windy, not much showing. At about 20:30 the wind started to ease and what a change, all of a sudden there was fly every where and the fish started to move, especially in the run below the sewage works. I caught 3 fish 7-9 inches 1 on a Klinkhammer and 2 on a Para Adams . Nice fish two still showing parr markings.
John Brophy

18th June
Fished from straight got 3 on Olive size 18 about 7 to 9 ins, fished through the pools upstream missing fish until a kind person got in above me and I had to get out. Had a nice fish in the pool below Sewage farm, then 3 others up to 10ins in the pool above Sewage farm, fished on up to weir but only missed fish, seems to be more fish moving now. up
Ian Robertson

Started fishing from the bottom of the straight cut, caught two good fish on a deer hair sedge in the fast water at around 1600, walked up to the sewage pool loads of fish rising. Crossed the river lower down and went back to the pool. It took me most of my fly box before I found the right fly, an size 24 F fly in black. Two casts two fish each about 1lb. Off to Tal-y Llyn on Sunday so if you post a fishing report you will have to wait until Wed for it to be posted.
Simon

20th June
Fished the evening from 7:30 for two hours. After all the rain on Sunday river resembled choco -milkshake, albeit that it tasted a great deal healthier. Level was dead on zero mind , and fish rising so thought it well worth a crack with dries. And so it proved, with a very pleasant evening's fishing. Went upstream from the Llay bridge and raised fish to a variety of flies. Naturally, I missed most takes and my “killer” flies found their arboreal end thanks to my crap casting. End result was three fish, two small (but cute) and one ¾ pounder on my absolute, definite last cast of the day. See, it's always worth that last cast, all 27 of them.
Barry Hughes

23rd June
Fished from straight up above weir, found it hard going at first but as the evening wore on I found fish rising to Olives above the Sewage works and had 4 on a size 18 Olive, one about 12ins and one which looked like somebody else’s stock about 11/2lb with a poorly tail, I moved back below the Sewage farm and got another 2 fish and lost another 3 of the hook.
Ian Robertson

Fished for an hour 19:00 to 20:00 Thursday 23/06. Had two small fish below sewage farm. Lot of fish rising, but very selective & in all those lovely hard to cast to places with lots of drag. Fished with small (18) parraloop dry flies in green or black.
Eddie

Fished on Thursday evening from about 6:00 - 8:00 pm from Llay Road bridge up to the cut. A few fish were moving but these were very easily spooked due to the low water conditions. Eventually caught 2 fish of ten inches on my favourite Black Klinkhammer. The water appeared to be running slightly cloudy and carrying sediment.
David Meadows

26th June
Fished after work party around the Llay Bridge, got 3 on 18 Olive from bridge up all decent fish about 10ins, fished further up but got nothing although I did move a couple. Moved below the bridge and got another 2 on a spent Olive size 18, I moved and missed several other fish but could not hook them.
Ian Robertson

28th June
We fished Matthews’s favourite spot in Griffin Woods this evening - 7.30pm to 8.30pm until the lightening. Matthew caught and lost one on a PTN, I caught and lost one on Dry fly given to me by one of the members, about size 16 grey hackle with thin grey silk body. All fish were small and carefully returned. Quite a few fish showing, shame we had to return early.
Jeff & Matthew Johnson

29th June
Tried the Griffin Woods on my own for an hour tonight (7-30 to 8-30pm), only saw 2 fish rising which I successfully managed to put down in no time at all !!! Weak fly hatch, think they were olives. Moved to a PTN still no action.
Regards Jeff Johnson

2nd July
Arrived at Llay Road Bridge around 3.30pm, weather was overcast with a fairly strong downstream wind. Spent a while talking to a couple of other members who had not had much luck with the wind or fish. A fish was rising be the river measure so I cast a CDC emerger to it, second cast one 6in fish. Worked my way up the swim above the bridge with the same fly, 2 more caught 2 got off. Then walked to the straight cut, first swim 2 fish caught 2 missed to the same fly. Moved to the next swim and changed to a black Klink hammer, faster water caught another 1 and lost 4. Had a phone call to say the tennis was over, so that was my fishing trip ended.
Simon.

Fished from sewage works up to Worm Wood, caught 6 fish from 6ins to 9ins. Did not see a fish move from the bend above the straight after the weir and right through Worm wood. Moved back to sewage works and got a nice fish 12ins measured and one 9ins. Caught mainly on olives and black Klinkhammer, fished from 8.30 am until 14.00 hrs.
Ian Robertson

3rd July
Fished after the work party from straight to sewage works got a nice fish under trees on an Olive 12 1/2ins as well as a small fish. and a nice fish 11ins from pool below sewage works, as well as a small fish from same pool.
Ian Robertson

10th July
Fished behind the Sewage works for 1hr before the working party 8am - 9am. Caught 4 fish on a size 16 light olive Klinkhammer from various pools. Missed one large fish and lost 3. All good takes and good fights, very strong fish.
Simon

12th July
Fished Tuesday evening upstream of Llay road bridge - first 100yds or so. Very little showing, only saw 3 fish rising which I managed to put down very quickly again!! Used a dry size 16 winged olive - no interest shown.
Jeff

14th July
Walked the river with Simon a new member from the straight cut to just above the sewage weir pointing out the good pools. Very few fish moving, very sunny and hot. Simon raised one fish to an olive Klinkhammer at the bottom of the cut but missed it. After getting caught in a tree behind the sewage works I had a quick cast before disturbing the run. Caught a 7- 8 inch fish on a CDC emerger. Carried on up past the weir, more fish seem to be moving here but no more caught.
Simon & Simon

17th July
Fished after work party from Llay road bridge to the Straight got 2 fish but put 5 or 6 down difficult to guess what they were taking but my fish took a Spent sedge, and Black Beetle. The funny thing was that both fish chased the flies and took them so confidently that they swallowed them.
Ian Robertson

Fished for 1hr before the working party, 8 - 9am form Llay Road Bridge up to the straight cut. Many black sedge just above the bridge, with trout jumping to take them from the air could not tempt them with my fly. Worked way up stream casting for non rising trout in the faster more oxygenated water. Managed to catch 5 and lose 2, all to a light olive parawing emerger. Am I the only one fishing? You all look at the reports but few seem to have the time to send them in! Thanks for the support.

22nd July
Sorry this is late. Fishing on Friday 22nd. Weather was overcast and around 15 degrees. There seemed to be plenty of fish rising and a lot of black sedge buzzing around the surface. Fished from the Llay Road Bridge up to the Straight Cut. Had two out of the pool just above Llay Bridge, both around 6 inches. Had another two from the Straight Cut, biggest was 8 inches. Lost three off the hook and missed umpteen takes. Fished a Tups Indispensable and the fish just hammered it.

23rd July
Fished 10am to Noon this morning, Griffin Woods area, seemed to be a little more water in the River today. Saw three fish taking flies at surface, could not touch them. Used size 18 light olive and black Gnat. Casting blind into fish holding spots managed to get a small fish to the surface 4 times and missed it 4 times!!!!! Still it was very pleasant out there.
Jeff & Matthew Johnson

Fished from 10.30am-6.00pm. River low, slow and clear. Cloud cover for most of the day until about 4.00pm when the sun broke through. Very light upstream breeze. Plenty of fish rising from Llay Bridge to the cut, although only small, taking nymphs just under the surface. Fished a size 14 GRHE nymph on leader greased to within a couple or three inches from the fly and could not stop catching. Missed dozens of takes as well, the fish were hitting the fly almost the moment it touched the water. However, all fish were in 5-6" range apart from one about 8". A few fish were tempted by a dry GRHE but the nymph was far more productive. It was nice to see the river alive again as all my visits of late have been sadly lacking in much fish activity. I suspect someone has topped up the river with fingerlings. A few 1lb - 11/2 would be quite useful as well!

24th July
Fished with Simon a new member, started above weir at top of river but it started to rain heavily and there was nothing moving. We fished to Cottage but terrible weather so we went back to Sewage works, some fish rising below the sewage works, hooked and lost it, probably new stock packed up absolutely soaked.

Sunday fished from Sewage works to just below Orchard cottage, never saw a fish move or able to move any fish, has anybody had a similar experience at this part of river, as I also blanked up there last Sunday.

6th Aug
Fished the river from 3.30 until 5pm above Llay Road Bridge . Plenty of fish moving all along the river. Caught 11, all on a size 18 light olive Klink-hammer. Most were around 6in largest about 12ins caught at the bottom of the straight cut.
Simon.

Fished from Llay bridge to top of cut, 10.30am-3.00pm. River height 0, running slow and clear. Overcast until early afternoon with light breeze then sunny with fresh north westerly. A fair number of fish showing above Llay bridge up to second field but very little action from there to top end of cut. Most fish were ignoring dries but very active with nymphs just under the surface. Caught 9 in all,on small GRHE nymphs, the smallest being about 4" and the largest 8.5",

7th Aug
Fished Sunday after work party started at Llay road bridge fished to Straight cut fished from 2o'clock until 4 got 11 fish manly small ones got them on green klinks, and beetles.
Ian

Fished yesterday 3.30pm for two hours from Llay road bridge upstream only managed to hook/lose one on a GRHE nymph fished just underneath the surface (second cast). Only saw about three fishing taking from the surface. Simon, if I injure my leg do you think I'll be able to catch more trout!! Hope you are back on the River soon.
Jeff

This will be my last report for a while, with my leg in plaster I am not allowed near water for a few weeks! With a damaged leg I managed 30mins around 1:30 this afternoon from Llay bridge up to the first gate. Caught 7 fish all to a size 18 light olive Klink-hammer. River is perfect at the moment, there is a lot of brown algae on the bottom.

19th Aug
Fished Friday from Llay bridge to the top of the cut. Had 6 fish in total up around 8 inches. Caught 2 on a size 18 winged olive and 4 on a size 20 Tups. River is in superb condition at the moment and I suspect that next month it will fish fantastically.

Fished on Friday morning from 9:00 - 12:00. Caught 12 trout to 10" on a Black Klinkhammer and should have caught many more. The fish were found in small pockets and took confidently in faster water. The water clarity was excellent and it was good to be able to see so many fish in the water. There was a group of well above average fish nymphing just downstream from the Llay road bridge but unfortunately signs that someone had been illegally fishing for them with bread. I am very impressed with the bank work that has been done in the cut.

20th Aug

25th Aug
Fished for about 1hr starting at 1130am. Sunny spells with the odd shower. River is perfect! Covered a small amount of water, Llay road bridge to first gate, 11 fish caught all to a size 18 olive kink-hammer,the two fish above were not showing at all, they come from under the bank to take the fly, very exciting fishing. Both caught without moving form the same spot. Small parr and 5 others in the same place. All fish were returned unharmed ready for the next lucky person. Have a look at the weed! the ducks have been eating the lot!!!!
Simon.

Thanks very much for your help with my visit and for the excellent flies. Please also pass on my thanks to Howard. It was a very enjoyable visit. Here is a bit for your website. Expeditions to new places and fishing new waters are always interesting and, as I had not heard of the Alyn before, I reckoned that if it flowed into the Dee it couldn't be too far away from my home in Birmingham. So, I bid on the Wild Trout Trust fundraising auction, and won the days fishing, which I took as two ‘half days' on the 25th and 26th August. Your clubs commitment not only to fishing, but also to improving your waters and to supporting the Wild Trout Trust, is an example to many other clubs. I found myself particularly impressed by the improved river in the woodland run. The groynes must have been particularly hard work to install. Can I particularly thank Howard and Simon for ‘hosting' my visit: showing me around, arranging a B&B with real ale, and providing me with a few of their favourite flies.
The peace and quiet on the river belies the fact that it is, conveniently, so close to a major road. The fishing was reliable but challenging and I was happy with my total of eight fish (plus a few that got away), the best being half a pound from by the road bridge with the most prolific area being under the two bridges. An enjoyable ‘day' and the local wildlife provided added interest: I have never before been distracted from watching the fly by a Kingfisher actually zooming under my rod and line! Who knows I might bid again next year. Best wishes
Paul Wilson.

27th Aug
Fished from 10.30am until 3.30pm. Water looks good, quite a surprise after the torrential rain on Wirral on Thursday. Only saw a couple of fish moving between Llay bridge and Flame Corner but could not tempt either with dries or nymphs. Bit more activity further upstream, missed a dozen or more takes on upstream nymph - must be old age. I did eventually catch two very good fish, one of some 10 inches and the other almost 12 inches. The first took a Hares Ear emerger in the surface film and the second a Greenwells Spider fished upstream about 6 to 8 inches below the surface. First time I've needed the landing net this season. There are four cygnets on the river feasting on the recently planted weed.

31st Aug
Fished from the Llay Bridge up to the top of the cut from between 9am and 12.30pm. Weather was warm but overcast. Not a lot rising and the water was lower and slower than I have seen it for a few weeks. Caught four, all good sized fish of between 8 and 10 inches. Two from Flame Corner fell foul of a size 22 light olive. One from between the two bridges took a size 20 Tups and the last and best fish, from the cut took a size 18 Ginger Quill.

Sept 1
What an odd days fishing. Fished from roughly 2.30pm until 5pm from Flame Corner to the top of the Cut, I really should try elsewhere. 8 fish in total of various sizes all taken on a size 22 olive Kink-hammer (thanks for the tip Simon). Saw a number of Mink and possibly what could have been an otter at Flame Corner. Moved up to the bottom of the Cut but was forced to move on by a rather large Heron. Went up to the middle of the Cut and was promptly attacked by the four signets. There also seems to be a lot of ducks on the river, which I am not sure if that's normal. What an incredible abundance of wild life we have on the river. Got to the top of the cut, just where the working party have put some new steps in to discover two teenagers fishing the pool with a spinner but they ran off before I could get to them. Also met a lovely elderly member called Jerry from New Brighton as I was making my way back to the car, who was have a good days fishing and spent about half an hour chatting.

2nd Sept
It's been hard to get back into this thing called work. My leg is now repaired so work has to come first! Managed to get to the river today around 4pm at Llay Road Bridge . Only had a fishing ticket for 1hr before I had to return home. River is very low and slow with the water very clear. Nearly all the weed that the club has planted has been eaten by 4 cygnets! After talking for 30mins only managed 2 fish to a light olive Klink-hammer size 18. Tackled two poachers again by flame corner, they were moving down river. It's amazing the amount of poachers that can't read! After a lot of abuse and gestures they moved off, with the car on the bridge you have to be careful.

5th Sept
Fished before the working party 8 -9.30. Caught 15 on a size 16 olive Klink-hammer from the bridge to the top of the straight cut.
Simon

Fished from about 18:00 until 20:30, water is very clear and seen two huge browns under Llay road bridge . Fished upstream from the bridge and caught a lovely Brown T rout of about 2.5 lbs on an Elk Hair Caddis, returned the fish to the water .Fished up towards the straight cut and caught 6 more between 6 ” – 12 ” . Regarding Poachers , it might be any idea to inform the Environment Agency and see if they can blitz the river, I think they will if asked.

13th Sept
2pm to 5.30pm. Fished up river from Llay bridge. I first tried wet fly but with no success. I then changed to dry fly and eventually after trying different flies I started getting takes and landed my first Alyn brown trout and returned it to the water. I was quite pleased with myself because I've not fished the Alyn for at least 30 years and now I'm back home so to speak!

16th Sept
Fished from 3.30 - until 5.15. The temp has really gone down in that wind. Fish were moving going up the river only 1 caught just below the straight cut to a size 18 Olive KH. Walked back to the car to find fish moving by the bridge. 4 more caught in the last 10mins. One was really nicely marked. The edges of all its fins were bright red.
Simon

12pm to 4.30pm. Fished up river from Llay bridge. Tried wet fly again because it was quite chilly and no fish were moving. Then when it got warmer I changed to dry fly a Gray duster size 16 and started getting takes mostly small brown trout about 6" to 7" which were all returned to the river. As I was walking down river back towards my car I met Simon he was working his way upstream. I told him I had seen the young bull and at that particular time I was in the river fishing so I stayed where I was until he moved off !!

25th Sept
Matthew and I fished from 2-30 till 4-00 Sunday afternoon, upstream from Llay Road Bridge. Beautiful afternoon, River looked magnificent. Quite a few fish showing, tried black KH and olive KH - fish showed no interest. Then tried nymphing with GRHE still with no success. Called it a day at 4pm and went home for Sunday roast !!!
Regards Jeff & Matthew

After talking to Ian on the river yesterday, he told me to give upstream nymphing a go, so this morning before the working party a nymph was attached. Working my way up river with no luck I tried a pool below the cut. Cast upstream into the fast water, watch the end of the line, it stopped. Lift into the fish. Fish on, All hell broke loose, this was not a small fish, after stripping line from the reel the fish jumped and cleared the water, then threw the hook. It’s hard to say for sure the size but it had to be a 2lb + fish
Simon.

27th Sept
Fished with Sonia from 3.30 - 5pm. Strong wind made dry fly fishing very hard! Plenty of fish moving Sonia caught 1 and lost about 5, I caught 5 and lost 3. All fish caught on a size 20 CDC Olive buzzer.

29th Sept
Fished down stream from far end of the sewage works used wet fly and nymph's in some of the fast water and pools and had a couple of pull's on a March brown size 14 but failed to hook up. I then pretty well went through my fly boxes to try and tempt some of the larger browns in the Alyn to take my fly but no luck I fished deep with small hare ear gold head nymphs - olive nymphs I even tried dry fly but to no avail. I met Brian and Peter by the Sewage outlet and had a chat mostly about entomology and then Peter showed me what nymphs where hatching out after getting nymphs and blood worms from the sewage outlet in his landing net. We then spotted a young man carrying a spinning rod walking down the foot path past the sewage works and Peter challenged him because he was carrying a bag with fish in it he told us he had caught them elsewhere not on our stretch of the river !

Called at the river for an hours fishing 18:00 - 19:00. Plenty of fish rising, had trouble getting my timing right (not fished since June) I managed to catch two on a parraloop size 18 in black. Only small - largest
8", did manage one other & I think it was a parr, just over 2", but it took very well. Look forward to next season now.
Eddie

Managed to get to the river around 4, conditions were perfect, fish everywhere. Both Sonia and I were using a size 20 CDC buzzer. The fish could not get enough of them. Sonia ending up catching 5, and lost many. I caught 9 and again missed and lost many. Only fished for just over the hour.
